Soil Blocks for Lisianthus (Texas Bluebells)

We started some seeds about three weeks ago. Lisianthus seeds are notorious for being very difficult. They take very long to germinate, they take a long time to grow deep enough roots to plant out. They just take time. They prefer to take root in cold weather. Living in South East Texas means we don't get many weeks of cold weather. So we had to start them early. And honestly, we probably could have started them a month ago, but that is okay. This year is about learning. We are learning what flowers do well in our heat, in our droughts, in our downpours, in our soil. Southeast Houston gets A LOT of rain. Like A LOT. I do not think people truly understand how much water we get here, but think about a lot, and then multiply it by at least 20. Last summer we went months without rain, this summer we went months without a dry spell. That's just life. So we are trying to find the flowers that can tolerate the weather, and then where to actually plant them.

Aside from the flowers, we have also started the process of building a greenhouse. Alvin found a bunch of large windows on Marketplace for free. Most of them will need to be fixed up in one way or another, but for the great price of free, we could not pass them up. This greenhouse will help us control the environment with so many variables that come into play with living on the Gulf coast. It is honestly so exciting when we step back and see just how we are slowly taking this piece of land that was truly left as a landfill and allowing it to not only become a true part of the eco system, but also be a service to us, the community, and hopefully to the greater population as well.
